The Past (2014). Review

Asghar Farhadi's new film "Secrets of the Past" has received the highest ratings from film critics. The director, as always, is as narrative as possible, but this does not make the picture boring. It's like a thriller, filled with increasing tension. This conveys the "Secrets of the Past" trailer well in Russian. The picture has a magnetic atmosphere after a quarter of an hour, the viewer feels like a participant in the events taking place on the screen. Berenice Bejo, who was invited to star in the film, also received high marks. Being an Iranian, Asghar Farhadi also made the main character of his painting an Iranian. We look at what is happening through his eyes, and we make assessments from his inner feelings. The script is written in layers and intriguingly. 
The main character arrives in Paris after 4 years of separation in order to get a divorce from his French wife. While he lives in her house, the events that took place in his absence open up to him. The action proceeds progressively, the events unfold gradually – one after the other. Only each new secret is more complicated and more confusing than the previous ones. In fact, this is a film about the love of two adults. There is no youthful fervor in their feeling, but this does not make it any less problematic. The story is also told with restraint, which emphasizes the color scheme of the film – these are gray and brown shades. There are many characters in the film, and each of them is represented by a world with its own problems. "Secrets of the Past" is a multifaceted movie that includes both drama and detective.
